We Sang for Obama(’s Sister)!

Maya and ArielBarbara, Maya and Amie

What an amazing opportunity to meet Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng (Obama’s sister) AND to sing our Obama song for her.

We gathered together 11 Obama singers – including three wonderful young girls who are enthusiastic Obama supporters – and attended an Obama fundraiser event organized by the fabulous Angela Chestnut, event coordinator for Women for Obama. Dr Soetoro-Ng was the featured guest and made a huge impression on the crowd. Because she is an educator, the theme of the evening was education. But, Maya also gave us some insights into Obama’s upbringing and home life.

What a remarkable woman. What a remarkable family. Like her brother, she is authentic and down-to-earth, professional, charming and humorous….and a great speaker too! She created the feeling of an intimate conversation with the crowd of over 100 people.

And we sang. It was incredibly hot. What is it about our singing that creates extreme weather conditions….it hailed when we filmed our music video and we had record breaking temperatures when we sang for Maya! It must be a testament to the power of song!

We’re ready to sing! If you are having an Obama event, and want to get the crowd energized, just let us know. Email us at info@singforobama.org

Obama in 30 Seconds ad

Last spring, MoveOn.org sponsored a grassroots 30 second campaign ad contest called Obama in 30 Seconds. We submitted our 30 second ad — >>Sing for Obama - Yes We Can — and while we didn’t win, we did end up in the top 10%. Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote!

One woman wrote a song about hope. 3 women heard that song. 4 days later, over 200 Santa Cruz, CA Obama supporters came together to join local singer-songwriter Ariel Thiermann and participate in the music video “Sing for Obama – Yes We Can”.

Use This Song to Energize Obama Supporters

This song inspires Obama supporters, we’ve seen it first hand. Please use it at your rallys, events and fundraisers. For more impact, teach people to sing it, it’s easy to learn. We’ve included an mp3 and the lyrics on the sidebar. We guarantee if you play this song a few times to the crowd, they can’t help but sing it, in three part harmony, no less! We still hear people around town humming snippets of this song. It’s infectious and inspiring.

The power of music and song to unite and motivate has been demonstrated over and over again in the major social movements of the past century. Let’s bring song into our movement for change with Obama.

Let’s keep building momentum, sing for Obama!

Background

On Saturday, February 23rd Santa Cruz County singers and video artists joined together to create a distinctly unique music video titled “Sing for Obama - Sing for America, Yes We Can”. Local singer-songwriter Ariel Thiermann, members of her local Women’s Singing Circles and Santa Cruz for Obama supporters, organized to produce a music video.

The event was recorded live and is intended to inspire community groups across the country to Sing for Obama! Local Santa Cruz organizers are challenging people across America to get together in their communities, learn the “Yes We Can” song, sing it and video it, and YouTube their own versions.

There is so much excitement and hope around Barack Obama’s campaign. It is great that Santa Cruz county is adding its voice to bring hope back to America

Ryan Coonerty, Mayor of Santa Cruz

Everybody we talk to about this event gets totally excited! This is a testament to the power of grassroots, the power of music and song, and the power that Obama has reminded us lies in each of our hands.
